I started this week with less of a goal in mind - I was just going to read more 'How to Draw' by Scott Robinson and draw some pictures I found from Pinterest.

After warming up with a page of lines, ellipsis, hand eye coordination and 1 point perspective practices, I found a picture to attempt to imitate. I used a photo this time instead of a painting by another person as per feedback from one of my tutors. She told me that photos or life will serve as better reference as you know the perspective will be accurate, another artist may have problems in their own work.

I drew out a thumbnail sketch first. This is advice given by the youtuber 'Stephen Travers Art' who specialises in environment illustrations. They recommended starting out with a little thumbnail in order to find the relations of elements in a reference. I wondered if this advice could only be useful when it comes to copying a subject to paper but if I were to draw a scene from mind then it would be useful to better understand the relation and proportions of parts of something like a building where I can look into references and better identify how high a window maybe placed next to a door.
The sketch is unfinished. I didn't like how it was turning out and it was looking odd. Looking back I could have used perspective lines to figure out where to place the bottom point of the right hand side of the top roof. I should have turned the page more when it cam to the horizontal lines, they turned out messy and unappealing. I also clearly don't understand angled planes in perspective yet. This could be a good picture to attempt to redo further down the line
I worked on some more exercises after, something simpler to cool down. I revisited some 2 point perspective practice as well as this was a weakness in the piece.
Later, I worked on more warm ups and then attempted another referenced, 2 point perspective picture

I chose a picture of a bedroom with less angled surfaces to work from. After this I knew I would have to read further into 'How to Draw' to see if that had any incite on angled surfaces, but for now I wanted to focus on this.
To me the perspective looks accurate and is probably my most cohesive piece so far. I applied slight vertical distortion which I think helps with the realism of the drawing. Some of the books on the shelf don't follow that vertical too well but there's an argument to be made that the books are leaning to one side - this could be better displayed if I finished drawing the tops of the books. Overall I'm quite proud of this one.
